One of the topics we discussed at BlogPaws was pet nutrition. They talked about the importance of being aware of what's in your dog's food, since most dog foods contain a large amount of by-products, fillers and even cancerous animal tissue.
I was like, "no problem! I got this!" I had been using what I thought was one of the safest options available.
I checked the back of the bag as soon as I came home and almost had a heart attack. As it turns out, it wasn't as good as I had thought. Here are 5 things you want to keep in mind when shopping for dog food:
- NO Glutens
- NO hormones or steroids
- NO by-products or chemical preservatives
- NO recalls
- U.S. ingredients
{{I dare you to check what is in your pet's food (please sit down before doing so, bol). The first 5 ingredients are the most abundant ones, but do read the whole label - for more information about what to look for click here}}
A well balanced, all natural diet is key to a long, healthy life.
Since then I have made a serious effort to improve Leela's diet. I have started cooking her food, and I have also started using Life's Abundance line of dog products.
Life’s Abundance Premium Health Food is veterinarian-formulated with safe and wholesome
ingredients, including a blend of vitamins and minerals, high-quality proteins,
whole grains, nutritious vegetables and fruits, omega fatty
acids, calcium and phosophorus and dietary fibers. Life’s Abundance contains no artificial
flavors or colors. And there’s no corn, corn gluten, wheat or wheat gluten.
They get all 4 paws up in our opinion:
1. I don't always have time to cook (even though I would love to). Knowing that I am able to complement Leela's diet with a healthy, wholesome alternative is great.
2. Their customer service is second to none - to keep it fresh, Life’s Abundance is not sold in stores; it is available through distributors who offer personal service. Fifi and Fido is an online distributor of Life’s Abundance. Owner, Dana Mayer provides super helpful tips on her blog and has a Facebook page where she shares holistic wellness tips and answers questions. She went above and beyond and answered all the questions that I had. And I had a lot of questions ;)
3. It costs less than my old brand
4. Mine was shipped as soon as it was made. It doesn't get much fresher than that.
You order online and it ships right to your door.
Here is what I've tried so far:
Leela is a picky eater but she loved her new Premium Health Food from the get go. At first, I mixed 10% of the new food with 90% of her old food (increasing the ratio of new food to old food as the days went by), to avoid upsetting her tummy.
Because of the lack of fillers, the dry food is a super food, which meant she only needed about 1/4 of a cup a day, instead of her usual 2/3 cup.
Wanna compare your brand to Life's Abundance dry food? They have a super cool tool on their site, that allows you to do just that. Here is the comparison chart for Life's Abundance and Wellness (the brand I used prior to making the switch). Cheaper and healthier? We'll take it!
I have also been giving Leela their Skin & Coat supplement. I have noticed that her hair is no longer matting like it used to. And her doggy scent has been a bit more pleasant. tee hee.
She also loves her new training treats. Maybe she will even learn a few new tricks? BOL
The result?
Leela says it is chop licking worthy!!!
Is there a particular all-natural dog product that you use and recommend? Let us know in the comments!
**Just so you know, I received all products free of charge, but all opinions are 100% my own.
I don't eat dog food silly! MOL. But I did try blue buffalo & wellness wet cat food recently {they are sorta natural}. The wellness was duck flavor & I just ate the juice. The Blue Buffalo was chicken & had real veggies in it. That was really good. Mommy liked that it was better for me then... ahh... not naming names but "popular" brands. Mommy got sick of feeding me food that didn't actually smell or look like food then read the label & was upset she had been giving me poopy food to eat.
ReplyDeleteI will tell mommy to look at Life's Abundance food. Maybe I would like it too.
Hi furryend, thanks for stopping by! They offer food for kitties too. Your mommy is smart, I am glad she switched your food. Those "food" companies are sneaky. We learned our lesson and are reading every label now. Mommy needs me to live a long life. What would she do without me? BOL.
DeleteLeela, love your outfit! So glad you're not eating junk food.
ReplyDeleteThanks Dana. I designed it and mommy made it for me. I woof stripes! Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteLife's Abundance makes cat food, too.
ReplyDeleteAny food sold in retail/big box stores can sit for months in trailers and warehouses that are not climate controlled. Why not get a food that is fresh? Blue Buffalo does have veggies which most kibble does not, but is missing diverse protein sources which are essential for kitties, and it does not have vitamins AC&E and prebiotics. MOL
Glad you found a good food for Oohleela!
ReplyDeleteLeela looks like one happy puppy!!! way to go on focusing on healthy goodness for your sweet little blonde bombshell!
